Disadvantages of Butyl Adhesive Tape
Although Butyl Rubber Tape has excellent performance, it also has some inherent drawbacks and limitations, which require special attention when selecting and applying:
1. Poor aging resistance and UV resistance
This is its most significant drawback. Directly exposed to sunlight and air, the surface of butyl tape will gradually age, harden, crack, and lose adhesion due to UV irradiation and oxidation, leading to seal failure. Therefore, it cannot usually be used as an exposed waterproofing and must be covered and protected with other materials such as metal pressure strips, coatings, etc.
2. Limited high temperature resistance
Butyl tape will become soft and flowing in continuous high temperature environments (such as metal roofs exposed to sunlight in summer, with surface temperatures reaching 70-80 ℃ or above), resulting in decreased resistance to sagging. The tape may be compressed and become thinner or displaced, affecting the sealing effect. High temperature can also accelerate its aging process.
3. High requirements for construction base surface
The base surface must be kept dry, clean, free of oil stains, dust, and looseness. Any moisture or pollutants can seriously affect its bonding effect, leading to weak adhesion or later detachment. Construction on damp substrates is a major taboo for waterproofing.
4. Poor resistance to chemical solvents
Butyl rubber is not resistant to oil and certain organic solvents (such as gasoline, xylene, etc.). If exposed to these chemicals, the tape will swell, dissolve, or corrode, thereby damaging the sealing.
5. Limited ability to withstand sustained water pressure
It is better at preventing "water" and "moisture", but for long-term immersion or situations with sustained static water pressure (such as basement waterproofing), its performance is not as good as more professional materials such as rolls, and it is usually used as an auxiliary sealing material.
6. High storage requirements
Butyl Rubber Tape should be stored in a cool and dry place, avoiding direct sunlight and rain, and should not be stacked too high to prevent the tape from sticking to each other under pressure.
