What regulations does DOT have for reflective tape?
The DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations on reflective tape are mainly based on the FMVSS 108 standard, which applies to trailers and truck tractors with a total weight of ≥ 10000 pounds (approximately 4.5 tons) and a width of ≥ 80 inches (approximately 2 meters). Its purpose is to enhance the visibility of large vehicles at night or in low visibility conditions to prevent collision accidents.
DOT's requirements for reflective tape:

Differences in DOT-C2/C3/C4 grades
DOT has classified three levels based on reflective intensity, with DOT-C2 being the most commonly used standard level:
• DOT-C2: Standard grade. Width ≥ 50mm, meets minimum reflective performance, suitable for the vast majority of commercial trailers.
• DOT-C3: High strength grade. Width ≥ 75mm, higher reflective brightness, suitable for harsh weather or scenes with high visibility requirements.
• DOT-C4: Super level. Width ≥ 100mm, providing the highest level of night visibility.
Installation Guide
• Sequential installation: For red/white alternating patterns, they must be laid out alternately according to the rules and cannot be arranged arbitrarily.
• Secure adhesion: Ensure that the reflective tape is firmly adhered to a thoroughly clean and dry surface.
• Regular inspection: Although there is no mandatory replacement cycle, the inspection of reflective tape must be included in the daily inspection of the fleet.
