What do pavement markings mean?

Pavement markings, also commonly known as road markings, refer to various lines, arrows, text, facade markings, raised road signs, and contour markers that are sprayed or embedded on the surface of the road.

Its core function is like the language of the road, conveying important information about road usage, traffic rules, and route guidance to drivers and pedestrians through concise and clear visual symbols, in order to ensure traffic safety and improve traffic efficiency.

Road markings

The main components and meanings of road markings:

Road markings typically convey information through color, form (solid/dashed), and pattern.

1. Classify by color:

White markings: mainly used to separate traffic flows traveling in the same direction and indicate the roadway.
-- White dashed line: allows crossing or changing lanes while ensuring safety.
-- White solid line: No crossing of the line is allowed, commonly used at intersections, ramps, and other places where standardized driving trajectories are required.
-- White dashed line (one solid line and one dashed line parallel): Vehicles on one side of the dashed line are allowed to overtake or turn over the line, while vehicles on the other side of the solid line are prohibited from crossing the line.
Yellow markings: mainly used to separate traffic flows traveling in opposite directions, or to indicate special areas such as prohibitions and restrictions.
-- Yellow dashed line: Overtaking or turning to the left is allowed while ensuring safety.
-- Yellow solid line: Strictly prohibit vehicles from crossing or crossing the line. If it is a double yellow solid line, it indicates that crossing is absolutely prohibited.
-- Yellow dashed line: It is prohibited to cross the line on one side of the solid line, and it is allowed to cross the line on the other side of the dashed line.
Other colors:
-- Orange markings: usually indicate construction areas or temporary traffic control.
-- Blue marking: commonly used as a free parking space marking or as an auxiliary color for non motorized vehicle lanes.

Road signs

2. Common types and meanings of markings:

Lane boundary: white dashed line, separating lanes in the same direction.
Lane edge line: a white solid line indicating the boundary of the roadway.
Stop line: A solid white line indicating the position where vehicles must stop while waiting for traffic lights or giving way at an intersection.
Pedestrian crossing (zebra crossing): A set of parallel white thick solid lines for pedestrians to cross the road.
Directional arrow: a white arrow indicating the direction of travel of vehicles in that lane (straight, left turn, right turn, etc.).
Deceleration and yield line: usually two parallel dashed lines, indicating that vehicles must slow down and let the main road vehicles go first.
Mesh line: A yellow grid like area indicating that no vehicle is allowed to park in this area to prevent traffic congestion.
Deceleration marking: a set of white or yellow diamond or square patterns that remind drivers to slow down.
Variable directional lane markings: There are multiple sawtooth shaped short diagonal lines drawn on the inside of the lane, indicating that the direction of travel of the lane can be changed according to traffic lights or signs.
