How do you join two pieces of artificial grass?
You can join two pieces of artificial grass primarily through a standard method involving adhesive and seam tape. Some newer products also offer integrated mechanical locking systems for a tool-free installation.
Artificial grass tape
Here is a comparison of the two main joining methods for your reference:
Feature Adhesive & Seam Tape Method Integrated Locking System
Process Gluing pieces to a specialized tape Clicking pre-made tabs and grooves together
Applicability Universal method for all standard artificial grass Only for products designed with this specific feature
Key Tools Seam tape, artificial grass adhesive, roller Often requires no special tools or adhesive
Primary Advantage Creates a strong, seamless, and permanent bond Offers easy installation and disassembly

Step-by-Step: Joining with Adhesive and Seam Tape
This is the most common and reliable method for creating a nearly invisible and durable seam.
1.Prepare the Base and Grass: Ensure the ground is completely dry, smooth, and free of debris . Unroll your artificial grass and let it acclimate, making sure the grass blades on both pieces are leaning in the same direction to avoid color and texture mismatch .
2.Align and Trim the Edges: Place the two pieces of grass next to each other, ensuring they fit tightly. For the cleanest seam, overlap the two pieces by about 2-3 cm (1 inch). Using a very sharp knife, cut through both layers at once to remove the selvage (the finished edge). This creates two perfectly matching edges .
3.Prepare the Seam Tape: Roll the seam tape (also called joining tape) along the seam, with the plastic or fabric side down and the sticky side up. Make sure it is centered under the gap where the two grass pieces will meet .
4.Apply the Adhesive: Use a spreader or trowel to apply a generous and even layer of specialized artificial grass adhesive onto the seam tape . It's crucial to use the correct glue, as other types may not hold.
5.Join the Pieces: Carefully lay the edges of both grass pieces onto the glued seam tape. Ensure they are perfectly aligned and that there is no gap between them, but also that they are not overlapping. The goal is a seam no wider than 2 mm .
6.Secure the Seam: Use a hand roller or a weighted roller to go over the newly joined seam. This presses the grass backing firmly into the adhesive, ensuring a strong bond . Let the adhesive cure completely as per the manufacturer's instructions before walking on it or proceeding with the next steps like adding infill .

Important Considerations for a Flawless Finish
Check the Grass Grain: Always ensure the "pile direction" of the grass is the same for all pieces. If one piece is laid in the opposite direction, it will appear to be a different color .
Mind the Weather: Do not attempt to join grass in rain or high humidity. The adhesive requires a dry surface and air temperature ideally above 10°C (50°F) to cure properly .
Work Quickly and Precisely: Once the glue is applied, you typically have about 15-30 minutes before it becomes too tacky. Align the pieces correctly on the first try, as sliding them back and forth after contact will weaken the bond .

To sum it up:
If you have standard artificial grass, the adhesive and seam tape method is your go-to solution.
If you prioritize ease of installation and potential for moving, look for products with integrated locking systems.
